Loss Of Biodiversity – A Silent Killer

Loss Of Biodiversity – A Silent Killer
Biodiversity refers to the variety of plant and animal life in the world. They provide the earth with a support system and contribute to our basic needs of food, water, energy and air. The loss of biodiversity is a silent killer and does not show immediate results. Out of 8 million animal species, more than a million face extinction in the near future. The rate of species extinction is accelerating, and the biosphere is being altered to unparalleled degree across all scales. The decline is faster than ever before in human history. By 2050, Africa is expected to lose 50% of its birds and mammals. Asian fisheries are also expected to completely collapse. The loss of plants and sea life will reduce the Earth’s ability to absorb carbon, creating a vicious cycle. More than 40% of amphibian species, 33 % of reef forming corals and a third of all marine mammals are threatened. Even a 2 degree rise in temperature by global warming will wipe out most of the tropical coral species. The future looks grave if this goes unchecked, eroding the very foundations of our economies, livelihoods, health and quality of our lives.
Many may not see it, but these insidious impacts can have rippling effects not only to our environment, the animals but to fellow humans as well. There is already visible loss of tropical areas seen in many regions around the world; changes in humidity in the tropical forests and savanna directly affect many agricultural hot spots; rain pattern changes directly affect the crops and yield and have made many people unemployed and debt-ridden. Even the corals that cover less than 0.1 % of the ocean floor are important for sustaining the aquatic life and provide coastal protection to 200 million people. If perhaps you may need a reason to protect the environment, know that to protect our environment is to protect ourselves.
At envoPAP we do our best to ensure that we use sustainable practices and source materials that not only protect our environment but reduce our waste as well. We also commit to several campaigns that protect and promote forestry, as we believe that they are the very lungs of our planet.
